Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT) is a public TVET institution under the Ministry of Education, State Department of Vocational and Technical Training, located in RIAT Hills, Kisu mu West Constituency, Kisumu County. In 1968, the Institute opened its doors to the first batch of 34 students in 1974 in the Building Construction course.  Today the trainee enrolment has soared to over 5000.

RIAT was started to provide professional training in technical, business, and applied science fields to Kenyan youths, and it has lived to its objective and curved a niche as a leader in training in TVET. Currently, the Institute offers 50 full-time programs from Artisan to Diploma levels. Also offered are CBET courses in Aquaculture Management Levels 3 – 4, Solar PV Technician Levels 1 – 3, Plumbing level 3, Masonry level 3, Fashion Design Technology level 4, Electrical Installation level 3, Automotive Technician level 5, Plumbing level 3, Food Production level 4, Marriage and Family Therapy level 6, Supply Chain Manager level, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning level 4, Social Work level 5, and Nutrition and Dietetics level 4. RIAT is a Centre of Excellence in Aquaculture.

Over the years, and in line with the TVET Act 2013, Vision 2030, The Big Four Agenda, and recent TVET reforms, the Institute has continued to expand its programs and activities to cope with the market demand as is reflected in its Vision and Mission.

VISION    : To be a leader in quality training that responds to the vocational technological needs of the local and global society.

MISSION : To produce skilled and self-driven technical education graduates with quality vocational and technical training and innovative and creative competencies for Kenya’s development.

RIAT produces quality skilled human resources relevant to industry needs for the economy’s various sectors’ growth and prosperity. The graduates are not job seekers but are job creators.

The Institute attributes its success to a committed Board of Governors chaired by Dr. Lily Kisaka, a hardworking team of 114 trainers and committed 52 support staff.

RIAT realizes the critical role played by linkages and collaborations between the Institute and industry in the provision of relevant practical skills and has formed partnerships and linkages with different organizations and key industry players, which include:

  • GIZ – Comprehensive Africa  Agriculture  Development programme (CAADP)
  • Mashav – Arava International Center for Agriculture training (AICAT) in Israel offering internship opportunities to RIAT Fisheries students for a period of 11 months.
  • IFAD – Aquaculture Business Development Programme
  • Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Irrigation through the State Department of Crops Development – hosting and implementing the Enable Youth Kenya Programme.
  • Common Wealth of Learning (COL) through Flexible and Blended Skills training which increases access to skills training and integration of sustainable development goals into TVET programmes and online skills training.
  • Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) – sharing training (workshops) and learning resources.
  • EU-EAC TRUE-Fish Farming Story in Lake Victoria Basin (TRUEFISH). RIAT is a training provider to students and fish farmers with the objective of capacity building for enhanced fish production

RIAT is an active player in exhibitions and trade fairs showcasing their innovations and research, and also active in fostering green economy. In the past one year RIAT planted over 5000 trees.

The Institute has joined hands with the government in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic by ensuring that the Ministry of Health guidelines on COVID-19 containment measures are adhered to. Further, it has reached out to the community in support of the fight against the pandemic by donating face masks and foot operated hand washing machines to two primary schools, and small and micro enterprise business operators within the locality.

In the spirit of continual improvement, RIAT has made remarkable progress in terms of infrastructure. The Institute boasts of a modern gate and a ladies hostel with a bed capacity of 350 beds. The Institute’s drive for excellence permeates deeply in its culture.
