As the first golden rays of sunlight stretch across the calm waters of Anyanga Beach in Usenge, Siaya County, the morning air comes alive with birdsong and the quiet hum of a new day. For Esther Achieng Ojwang, each dawn brings more than light—it brings a renewed sense of purpose, growth, and hope. Once confined to the uncertainties of casual labour after school, Esther—like many young women in her community—longed for a better, more stable future. That future began to take shape the moment the Youth in Sustainable Aquaculture (YISA) program reached the shores of her village. Today, Esther is not merely earning a living—she is thriving. As a self-employed aquaculturist and active member of the Anyanga Smart Cage Farmers’ group, she has become a powerful example of transformation through knowledge. The YISA program introduced her to the world of sustainable aquaculture, equipping her with vital skills in fish farming. What once seemed mysterious is now a daily source of success and pride.
